BIOCOX (salinomycin sodium)

BROILER

At 180 ppm (3 times the usual dose) reduction of the feed consumption and weight.

LAYING AND BREEDER PULLET

No problem at 60 ppm. A sudden introduction at 16 weeks has caused 5% mortality (Griffith & al-1989).

LAYING HEN

25 ppm decreased the production of eggs and the feed intake. Production returned to normal  after stopping the supplement. Residue in the eggs.

BREEDER HEN

At the usual dose a significant reduction of the hatchability (Jones et al–1990).

TURKEY

Maximum doses tolerated in continuous feeding:

0-12 weeks :              40 ppm
+12 weeks :               20 ppm
adult female :              10-15 pm

A sudden introduction of 15-20 ppm  before 12 weeks is badly tolerated : in the adult, dyspnoea, ataxia, myopathy and mortality in 5 to 12 hours.

DUCK

Maximum dose tolerated for fattening ducks : 100 ppm continuously.

GUINEA FOWL

Maximum dose tolerated : 120 ppm if fed from day old

Sudden introduction at 3 weeks of 12-23 ppm : paralysis and mortality (Reece 1988 ).

PHEASANT

Maximum dose tolerated : 60 ppm - good anticoccidial.(Jurkovic- 1982).

QUAIL

Maximum dose tolerated : 30 - 40 ppm, paralysis and possible mortality (Reece - 1988).

PARTRIDGE

Maximum dose tolerated  40 ppm.

RABBIT

Salinomycin is authorised in fattening at 20-25 ppm.

No negative results up to 50 ppm.

HORSE

LD50= 0.6 mg/kg LW- Very toxic. 4 kg of feed with 60 ppm have caused  circulation and “colic” problems.

CATTLE

Preruminant – 20 ppm – No negative results.

Ruminant – 60 ppm – No negative results.

SHEEP

At 40 ppm no negative results.

SWINE

Salinomycin is authorised at 60 ppm up to 4 months, 30 ppm up to 6.

Is tolerated 8 times the dose continuously. No mortality at 16 times the dose in single dose.
